Chantecaille’s Charitable Efforts – Using Beauty to Change the World

Chantecaille launches Spring 2014 Save the Bees collection.

Ever the Good Samaritan of the beauty industry, Chantecaille has revealed the good cause of its next collection - and it's the bees' knees, writes Ayesha Muttucumaru

Forget the beauty buzzwords of seasons gone by, as next January heralds the arrival of a new springtime slogan - ‘bees,’ or more specifically #savethebees, courtesy of the Chantecaille Spring 2014 collection.

Dubbed ‘Nature’s Pollinators,’ bees have played an important role in our ecosystems for millions of years. However their populations have vastly decreased over the past five years due to disease outbreak, climate change, repeated use of dangerous pesticides and even radiation given off by mobile phones.

As Founder Sylvie Chantecaille stated at the launch, “The environment is our passion,” a fact evident from the fantastic array of good causes championed by the brand in the past. Next season will be no different as Chantecaille turns its attention to our honey-hoarding, blossom-deflowering bumbling friends of the environment, as they aim to spread awareness on their integral role in nature and the effect their dwindling numbers will have on future fruit harvests and farmers’ livelihoods.

Chantecaille Wild Horse Collection

Chantecaille's look for autumn has an earthy, equestrian feel - and it's all for a good cause, writes Judy Johnson

Chantecaille has released its latest collection for this autumn, embracing the warm and earthy tones seen on the catwalks for the upcoming season and adding a touch of equestrian style.

This year's range takes design inspiration from the spirit and beauty of wild horses, to reflect their partnership in which 5% of all proceeds are donated to the Humane Society to help their efforts in conserving the land on which the animals roam.

Included in the range is the Wild Horses Palette containing a quad of warm, neutral eyeshadows, with a chestnut golden brown, creamy beige, a dusky flush of pink and a strong black which can also be used as a liner. With a slight shimmer, a super creamy powder texture and effortless blending qualities, it's all you need to evoke a sunset-inspired look for next season. The pretty casing is also a keeper - a refillable compact that you can use again and again.

Due to a deep concern for our endangered environment and the many animals at risk, Chantecaille has always reached out to its customers – through its products and coverage in the press – on these universally relevant issues. A key impetus for creating the company was a strong desire to establish a platform with the power to draw attention to important issues of global sustainability, and to fund a foundation that could support related initiatives. According to founder Sylvie Chantecaille, “Our customers are very intelligent women with the power to make a difference.” Chantecaille’s special relationship with them has been essential to educating a broader audience and engaging more people in bringing about positive change.

February sees the launch of the spring collection from French beauty brand Chantecaille. The range features a collaboration with the Bloom Association, a non-profit organisation dedicated to marine preservation. The Save the Sharks palette features four shades: Great White, Grey Reef, Black Tip and Sea Anemone, each inspired by the creatures and coral of tropical seas; 5% of proceeds go to the organisation. Also new for spring are the Geode Gel Eye Liner, Daphne and Rose Délice Lip Chic as well as Framboise and Pink Melon Luminous Gloss. The full line will be available at Space NK, Harrods, Fenwick Bond Street and Liberty.

For Fall 2012 we honor the planet’s largest living land mammals, the Elephants; they symbolize strength, wisdom and intelligence. Sadly, the threat to elephants from ivory poachers is greater than ever with an estimated 38,000 African elephants killed annually – a rate that left unchallenged would see elephants wiped out by 2025.

5% of all proceeds of The Elephant Palette will be donated to The David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust.

In Spring 2012, Chantecaille proudly joins theMarine Conservation Institute in their efforts to protect 10% of the world’s oceans by 2020. The oceans cover 71% of the earth, providing 80% of our oxygen and food for 3.5 billion people; yet less than one half of one percent of our oceans are protected. The health of the ocean is vital and coral reefs are sounding the alarm. Today three quarter’s of the world’s coral reefs are now at risk due to over fishing, pollution, and global warming. Maintaining 10% of the ocean’s ecosystems as “no take marine protected areas” is the best chance for coral’s survival. With the purchase of The Coral Reefs Palette, 5% of proceeds will help the Marine Conservation Institute to create a network of new Marine Protected Areas to protect vibrant coral ecosystems and eliminate bottom trawling – the most destructive fishing technique – on the High Seas

In Spring 2011, Chantecaille is partnering with Dr. Karen Eckert of WIDECAST, who is focused on saving sea turtles in the waters of the Caribbean Sea. WIDECAST, the Wider Caribbean Sea Turtle Conservation network, is comprised of a network of experts resident in more than 40 Caribbean nations and territories, all working together to realize a future where sea turtles and human communities can live together in balance With the purchase the Sea Turtle Palette, 5% of proceeds will help WIDECAST ensure the survival of sea turtles.

In Fall 2010, Chantecaille has created a limited edition palette to celebrate and raise awareness for the disappearance of the wild tigers, an issue that has not yet received the urgent attention needed. Since 1998, the last Year of the Tiger, the population of tigers in the wild has diminished from 5,000 to 3,200. Five percent of the proceeds from the sale of the Holiday 2008 Le Tigre Collection and Tiger in the Wild palette benefit TRAFFIC, a wildlife trade monitoring network, to support its courageous efforts in the fight against tigers’ disappearance.

Les Dauphins, Chantecaille’s Spring 2010 initiative in spotlighting the natural beauty of one of the world’s most magical creatures— the Dolphins. In our continuing pursuit of building awareness and support for some of the world’s most vital environmental causes, Chantecaille is proud to shine a light on a fast-growing global issue: the increasing eradication of the world’s dolphins. To bring further support to the dolphin’s survival worldwide, Chantecaille gave 5% of Les Dauphins to Giovanni Bearzi, who heads upTethys– A non-profit NGO for the study and the conservation of the marine environment in the Mediterranean.

In Spring 2009, Chantecaille partnered with scientists and conservationists worldwide to focus on the urgent need to preserve the High Seas. Existing 200 nautical miles off coastlines, the High Seas are owned by no one and therefore wholly unprotected. The High Seas are sacred in so many ways, in part because they are home to billions of plankton that produce close to 80% of our planet’s oxygen,as well as to ancient sea turtles that have swum the oceans for millions of years, and also to the great Blue Whale, the largest and most majestic animal on Earth. La Baleine Collection highlights the importance and beauty of the Blue Whale, and how it’s migratory home – the High Seas – needs immediate protection. A series of Marine Protected Areas, proposed by Chantecaille in a brochure calledHigh Seas Gems: Hidden Treasures of our Blue Earth, was officially launched at the International Union for Conservation of Nature‘s World Conservation Congress in Barcelona, Spain in October 2008. The project is intended to generate a consensus for creating a series of MPA’s within the High Seas by 2012.

Protected Paradise, Chantecaille’s Spring 2008 initiative is an ongoing campaign to shed light on our planet’s fragile biodiversity. Continuing to focus on the urgent situation of our oceans, this collection calls attention to over-fishing and the destruction of marine habitats, and promotes the establishment of protected zones on the East Coast of the United States.

In 2007, Chantecaille launched Le Corail, a special, Jay Strongwater – designed compact. The compact supported the work of Professor Andrew Baker and his Reefs of Hope Project that is focused on finding new ways of reversing the effects of pollution, over-fishing and global warming on the world’s invaluable coral reefs. These complex ecosystems serve as infrastructures essential for maintaining the integrity of our coastlines.

Sales of Les Papillons for Spring 2006 enabled Chantecaille to contribute more than $20,000 toThe Monarch Butterfly Sanctuary Foundation. The habitats of this beautiful saffron-colored creature-now on the endangered species list-have been gradually disappearing due to rampant overdevelopment and global warming. A percentage of the proceeds from these unique compacts paid for the replanting of trees in Michoacan, Mexico, to restore the butterflies’ precious winter habitat.

Chantecaille has long dedicated itself to fortifying the outside from within, using natural ingredients in its products to organically nurture the body. This sense of balance and reciprocity also helps define the Chantecaille aesthetic, which expresses a deep respect for the extraordinary beauty and richness of nature. The company joins with its customers to have an effect beyond the merely personal, contributing together-one innovative beauty product at a time-to a better world.

Les Dauphins

Once plentiful in the cradle of civilization — The Mediterranean, and particularly in the waters surrounding Greece — the common dolphins are becoming so scarce, they now reside on the IUCN Red List of Endangered Species. Dolphins are highly intelligent and considered in many cultures to be a sacred link between humans and Gods. In antiquity, killing a dolphin was an act punishable in some countries by death. But today, dolphins face countless threats across the globe. Extreme over-fishing, severe lack of marine-protected areas, habitat degradation, trawling, marine pollution, and illegal harvesting (notably profiled in the recent documentary, The Cove) continues to threaten the survival of this magical creature.

3

Tiger in the Wild

While the world cebrates the Year of the Tiger, the plight of this majestic animal continues. In fact, this celebration of the tiger places it in a more perilous situation. Demand has increased for tiger parts including paws, teeth, bones and skins while the last of the tigers are being poached, tiger farms are sprouting in Asia catering to the illegal trade in body parts. Tigers are poached, hunted and exterminated for small and big profit. The disappearance of wild tigers is of utmost urgency, as the loss of our top predators is the barometer of an ecosystem in trouble.

With this palette Chantecaille supports TRAFFIC*, an international wildlife trade monitoring organization to help save the last tigers in the wild.

La Baleine

The High Seas cover nearly half of our planet. From the Southern Ocean of Antarctica to the Northern Arctic, the Indian Ocean to the Mediterranean Sea, the High Seas account for more than 45 percent of the earth’s surface-an enormous expanse of ocean and life that is outside the reach, and protection, of any one nation. By definition, the High Seas exist 200 nautical miles beyond each country’s coastline, and there, without international regulation and jurisdiction, they are rapidly and ruthlessly being destroyed. Laid waste by industrial fishing, acid toxicity, floating plastic garbage, sonar pollution and other human causes, the High Seas have become an international feeding and dumping ground-a marine frontier where nothing is controlled, and nothing is sacred.

More than any creature, the Blue Whale symbolizes the health of the High Seas. Stretching up to more than 100 feet long and up to 200 tons, this mysterious and endangered species travels enormous distances, roaming the farthest reaches on its migratory route, as it criss-crosses the High Seas. Along the way, it continually experiences the threat of human impact. Hundreds of whales die each year from entanglement in fishing nets. Sonar pollution and noise from container ships and undersea drilling and exploration disorient whales, hindering their communication and causing physical damage. Thousands of whales are hunted and killed each year in spite of the official moratorium on whaling, as several nations find their way around legal loopholes.

The Blue Whale epitomizes the health and harmony of the planet-and its wellbeing is directly tied to that of the High Seas. In order to safeguard our planet, we must prevail upon the global community to work together to protect the High Seas.

To help in all of these efforts, Chantecaille is donating five percent of the sales of La BaleineCollection to The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).

6

Le Tigre

Chantecaille continue to speak on behalf of those who cannot-bringing awareness to urgent situations that affect us all. The disappearance of wild tigers is of utmost urgency, as the loss of our top predators is the barometer of an ecosystem in trouble. Tigers are poached, hunted and exterminated for small and big profit. On the brink of extinction, traded illegally on the black market for skins and body parts, these wild creatures are now fewer than 2,500 in existence. Only a strobe light on the situation and the tireless work of fearless people can help stop this dangerous trade. We have chosen to benefit TRAFFIC, the international wildlife trade monitoring network, whose courageous work is a strong weapon in the fight against tigers’ disappearance. It is a world – wide concern, which needs attention and focus. The World Bank has announced a global venture with The International Tiger Coalition, a group of 39 organizations of scientists, tiger specialists and conservationists, includingTRAFFIC, to help reverse the decline in the number of tigers in the wild-the first time ever in its history of supporting a species. We honor its beauty and celebrate the Royal Bengal Tiger with this limited-edition collection.

7

Le Corail

To Chantecaille, nature is a bountiful resource, an awesome inspiration and a magical muse. So it makes perfect sense that the brand strives to elevate awareness and give back to the natural world that contributes so much to its success. For Spring ’07, Chantecaille supported the work of Professor Andrew Baker, who’s program “The Reefs of Hope” focuses on new ways of reversing the effects of pollution, over-fishing and global warming on the world’s invaluable coral reefs. These complex ecosystems serve as essential infrastructures maintaining the integrity of our coastlines; as buffers holding back tidal waves and regulating other extreme weather conditions; and as home to fish that provide nearly two-thirds of the protein intake to developing coastal nations. The loss of these vital reefs will have potentially devastating effects on both animal and human populations around the globe.

8

Protected Paradise

A major report issued in October 2007 by the United Nations Environment Program warned of a global collapse by 2050 of all large species of fish, should industrial fishing around the world continue at its current pace. The report stated that 30% of all fish stocks are now classed as collapsed due to overfishing. 72% of our planet is comprised of oceans, yet less than ½ a percent is protected. Doesn’t this seem strange to you? It does to us!

Over the past 20 years, we as humans have methodically and unscrupulously drained the great abundance of our oceans, leaving them a virtual desert. 90% of the great fish are gone. Fish simply don’t stand a chance against line-fishing (millions of miles of hooked nets) and trawling, destructive practices that are responsible for millions of pounds of bycatch (the incidental deaths of millions of marine life that are not even used). The situation is so bad that the scientific community agrees what is coming within the next half-century is a total destruction of catastrophic proportions, similar to the eradication of the dinosaurs – only this time, man will be responsible.

This does not have to be the final outcome. By making intelligent food choices and voting for the establishment of global marine preserves that allow fish to rebound, we can reclaim our oceans and allow them to replenish, returning to the rightful domain of unbelievable wildlife.

Chantecaille is determined to inform its clients and to provide avenues for effecting positive change.

The compact design includes:

  • Two fish that represent a host of overfished and endangered species (including clownfish, orange roughy, sea bass, Nassau grouper and humphead wrasse)
  • A school of smaller forage fish, an essential component of the underwater food chain that supports bigger fish, now threatened because of their use in aquaculture
  • A sea horse, net-harvested in mass quantities for decorative use in aquariums and for gourmet and medicinal purposes
  • Coral, a vital and seriously endangered organism
  • A graceful expanse of sea grass, a crucial source of shelter and nutrition for fish that is being destroyed by trawling

9

Les Papillons

Chantecaille’s Les Papillons Collection is of particular relevance right now, as the American butterfly is currently under greater attack than at any time in its existence. The Monarch butterfly, a national symbol, is now on the endangered species list. Every year, what has been known as the “miracle migration” of the Western Monarch Butterfly has signaled its arrival with magnificent blazes of orange against the autumn sky. Flying from as far north as Canada to find a winter home in the eight to ten last remaining Monarch habitats in California and Mexico, the Monarch mates at the end of winter, before starting the journey back north in the spring.

The fragile ecosystem of the butterfly’s winter home has been disrupted over recent years by logging and deforestation due to the drive for increased coastal development. The subsequent effect of global warming has led to early butterfly desiccation and death. The milkweed where the female Monarch lays her eggs during the winter is seen as a weed and killed with herbicides.

Chantecaille’s Les Papillons collection seeks to help protect the Monarch Butterfly’s winter habitat by donating 5% of all sales to theMonarch Butterfly Sanctuary Foundation, established in 1997 by scientists and educators seeking to replace and revive the winter butterfly habitats. Thus far we’ve donated over $20,000, which has gone towards replanting trees in Michoacán, Mexico, a natural winter home for the butterflies.
